Miles & Care

Pamoja Miles & Care call For Partnerships in Safe and Healthy Journeys to School

Pamoja works with government communities, development banks, foundations, private-sector companies and others to deliver safe and healthy journeys to and from school and other destinations in Kenya.

Road safety has changed, the days of look left then right then left again before crossing are long gone. We have increased road networks and motorization, boda bodas, three wheelers and others that have completely changed the transportation ecosystem. We must and should tackle road safety differently to make roads safer and keep our children safe.

We must embrace safe system approach which is a paradigm shift: The Safe System is an approach to road safety which puts the human being at its Centre and which stems from the belief that every road death or serious injury is preventable.

The Safe System approach is built upon two basic facts about people.

  1. People make mistakes, and will make mistakes when on the roads.
  2. People are vulnerable to being killed or seriously injured, if they are involved in a crash. The Safe System recognizes these facts and seeks to design them out of the equation.

Put simply, this means that all elements of the road system – vehicles, infrastructure, speed limits, road users, and post-crash care – work together as one to minimize the chance of a crash, or, if a crash does take place, to prevent death or serious injury from occurring.

Pamoja Miles & Care

Miles and Care is our unique approach to tackling modern day road safety challenge around schools to promote safer journeys to and from school while creating a connection and relationship between communities and businesses.

Pamoja Miles & Care Benefit: Community Impact

Businesses aiming to contribute positively to society must consider their community impact — the influence they can have on various aspects of the communities in which they operate. This influence can range from economic contributions to fostering social cohesion and improving the
quality of life for community members. These impacts can create meaningful and lasting change, allowing businesses to become more deeply connected with the places where they operate and the communities around. When local communities thrive, businesses can see a corresponding uplift in their sustainability and reputation. Likewise, as businesses thrive, they are able to give back more to the community, creating a feedback loop that benefits everyone involved.

Why Pamoja Miles & Care?

Every day, an alarming number of children’s lives are affected by road crashes. For young people aged 5-29 years, road crash injuries are globally the leading cause of death. Approximately 3,000 children are seriously injured or killed daily – many of whom are simply making their way to or from school. Pamoja Miles & Care Initiative is designed to reduce these tragedies, ensuring that children can travel to school safely and return home without harm. By aligning with global goals for education and safe urban spaces (Sustainable Development Goals 4 and 11), the Initiative champions a child’s right to learn, play, and explore safely.

Join Us in Creating Safer Journeys

Pamoja Miles & Care Initiative offers a structured approach for schools and local authorities to address and act on key road safety risks around schools. By partnering with us, you can play an essential role in protecting the lives of children and ensuring safer journeys to and from school. This partnership includes:

  • Engineering Safety Upgrades – Implementing visible engineering measures, such as improved signage, pedestrian crossings, and traffic-calming zones around school areas, to reduce risks.
  • Lowering Speed Limits – lowering speed limits around schools to no more than 30 km/hour dramatically reduces collisions and their severity.
  • Assisting to cross the road – Engaging Volunteers/ Lollipop holders to assist the children especially during school arrival and departure hours.
  • Educational Outreach – Educating children, their families, and the wider community on road safety behaviors to
    instill lifelong safety habits.
  • Community Awareness – Building a network of community awareness to make child road safety a shared priority.

Pamoja Miles & Care Goals

  1. Reduce Speed: Lower vehicle speeds around schools to ensure safer environments for children on foot or bike.
  2. Enhance Crossing Safety: Improve road crossings for safer, more visible pathways near schools.
  3. Encourage Safer Routes: Support children in choosing safe walking or cycling routes.
  4. Improve Drop-Off/Pick-Up Safety: Organize safe entry and exit points during peak school hours.
  5. Increase Safety Restraint Use: Promote helmet and seatbelt and child restraint use to protect children being driven to school.

Pamoja Miles & Care Phases

Pamoja Miles & Care operates through a streamlined four-step approach to implementation:

1. Miles & Care Initiation
Begin with school and local authority support, ensuring all necessary stakeholders are engaged and aligned.

2. Safety & Analysis
Identify specific road safety challenges through a comprehensive situational analysis of the school’s surrounding environment.

3. Action Plan & Execution
Develop and implement tailored action plans to address identified safety issues.

4. Impact Measurement
Regularly measure and review outcomes to assess Programme effectiveness and make improvements as needed.

Each phase is designed to work collaboratively with schools and communities, promoting road safety strategies that make a measurable difference.

Identifying Key Road Safety Issues

Children face a unique set of challenges when traveling to and from school. Pamoja Miles & Care tackles these five primary concerns:

  1. High vehicle speeds around schools.
  2. Inadequate pedestrian infrastructure, such as pedestrian crossings and footpaths.
  3. Overcrowded school transport including boda bodas carrying more than one child.
  4. Unsafe arrival and dismissal practices.
  5. Unsafe and rickety school transport vehicles.

By assessing these issues through our detailed situational analysis, we tailor solutions to each school’s specific needs.
