Pamoja Road Safety Initiative (PRSI) welcomes the launch of the Decade of Action for Sustainable Transport (2026-2035) and its accompanying Implementation Plan, recognizing it as a pivotal opportunity to advance equitable, safe, and sustainable mobility for all Kenyans. As a grassroots-driven initiative built on community passion, youth engagement, and citizen advocacy, we applaud the Plan’s acknowledgement of the critical role of safe public transport, non-motorized mobility, and people-centered urban design — issues that remain at the heart of Kenya’s transport challenges.
Road crashes continue to take an unacceptable toll: more than 1.19 million lives lost globally every year, with millions more injured. Kenya and other low- and middle-income countries experience a disproportionate share of this burden. Pedestrians, cyclists, boda boda riders, and public transport users — many from vulnerable socio-economic groups — are the most exposed yet least protected. Advancing sustainable transport in Kenya is inseparable from reducing these preventable deaths and injuries.
We therefore welcome the Plan’s prioritization of walking, cycling, and high-quality public
transport as essential modes for safe and sustainable mobility. These modes not only improve
safety and affordability, but also contribute to cleaner air, reduced emissions, healthier
communities, and inclusive access to opportunities. We strongly support the Plan’s commitment
to the Safe System approach, recognizing that responsibility for safety lies with those who
design, operate, and regulate the transport system.
As PRSI, we believe that successful implementation of the Plan must turn these principles into practical, measurable, and adequately resourced actions. We emphasize the following opportunities:
PRSI stands ready to collaborate with government institutions, UN agencies, NGOs, youth groups, and communities across Kenya to ensure that road safety remains central to sustainable transport action. We remain committed to empowering a strong citizen movement through awareness campaigns, youth leadership, community engagement, and advocacy that prioritizes safe, inclusive, and sustainable mobility for all.
Sustainable transport cannot be achieved unless it is safe — for every person, in every community, across Kenya.
About Pamoja Road Safety Initiative (PRSI)
Pamoja Road Safety Initiative is a public, volunteer-driven community network in Kenya
dedicated to safer roads and sustainable mobility. Our champions — professionals, youth, and citizens from diverse backgrounds — work together to promote road safety awareness, advocate for safer streets, and support inclusive, people-centered mobility across the country.
PRSI will partner with people who take action in their communities by highlighting and celebrating their work in our ‘Meet Our Champions’ shout out in our website.
We call upon Partners willing to support community activities by way of issuing certificates of recognition or sponsoring other forms of recognition to road safety champions. We are here to inspire action and help people be community champions for safe and healthy mobility. Work with family and friends to join or set up a campaign locally to improve your streets. We can all be part of the solution and we will work with anyone who shares our vision and values. Share your story so that others can get inspiration from it.
We want a Kenya and world where everyone is free to move in a safe and healthy way, every day. We work to stop road deaths, injuries, and campaign for safe and healthy mobility for all.
